Over the past few weeks peanut products has come under a lot scrutiny as a result of several salmonella outbreaks. Although it is important to be aware of this situation and avoid the products at fault, you should not make the mistake of lumping every single brand of peanut butter under the same tainted roof. Natural peanut butter is an essential food for your diet (unless your allergic). Its high protein and fiber content make it a great power food, and its high percentage of polyunsaturated fat helps raise your HDL (good) cholesterol, which keeps your overall balance in check. If you’re trying to eat healthy, natural peanut butter is a great option; it will also give you tons of energy and help you pack on the muscle.
How do you find a quality peanut butter? The most important thing to remember is to pony up the extra cash for natural or organic. Unlike other products where organic is just a buzzword (here’s looking at you garlic powder) there actually is a big difference between organic peanut butter and it’s highly processed, unnatural counterparts. Choosey moms do not choose Jiff, in fact Jiff, Skippy, Peter Pan and all the other processed junk are loaded with unnecessary fats and preservatives. You should never buy any product containing “partially hydrogenated” anything, after you check for that, you really just have to ask yourself one thing. Smooth or chunky? I prefer the chunky variety; chunks need lovin’ too.
There are a number of great brands out there, but I think the best is Naturally More. You wont find any stomach churning salmonella bacteria in their jars.
